Description

Bunium bulbocastanum is a plant species in the family Apiaceae. It is related to cumin (Cuminum cyminum) and commonly called black cumin[citation needed], blackseed,[citation needed], black caraway,[citation needed] or great pignut,[2] and has a smoky, earthy taste. It is often confused with Nigella sativa. Local names for the spice are Kala Jeera (meaning ‘black cumin’) or shahi jeera (meaning ‘imperial cumin’) in Hindi. It is called as ‘zireh kuhi’, meaning ‘wild cumin’ in Persian and as ‘siyoh dona’ meaning ‘black seed’ in Tajiki. It is practically unknown outside these areas. Kashmiris call it as ‘Kashmir zireh’ or ‘Koshur zur’.Black Cumin Seed help in Digestion, Psoriasis, Eczema, Diarrhea, Colic, Asthma, Allergies, Cough, and Flu.They are used as a spice in breads especially rye bread, which is denser because of the yeast-killing properties of the essential oil, Limonene.

 

Health Benefits:

  • Cumin seeds contain many phytochemicals that are known to have antioxidant, carminative and anti-flatulent properties. The seeds are an excellent source of dietary fiber.

  • Its seeds contain certain health benefiting essential oils such as cuminaldehyde (4-isopropylbenzaldehyde), pyrazines, 2-methoxy-3-sec-butylpyrazine, 2-ethoxy-3-isopropylpyrazine, and 2-methoxy-3-methylpyrazine.

  • The active principles in the cumin may improve gut motility and help in digestion by augmenting gastrointestinal juice (enzyme) secretions.

  • The spice is an excellent source of minerals like iron, copper, calcium, potassium, manganese, selenium, zinc and magnesium. Copper required in the production of red blood cells. Iron is essential for red blood cell formation. Zinc is a co-factor in many enzymes that regulate growth and development, digestion and nucleic acid synthesis. Potassiumis an important component of cell and body fluids that helps controlling heart rate and blood pressure. The human body uses manganese as a cofactor for the important antioxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutase.

  • It also contains very good amounts of B-complex vitamins such as thiamin, vitamin B-6, niacin, riboflavin, and other vital anti-oxidant vitamins like vitamin E, vitamin A, and vitamin C.

  • The seeds are also a rich source of many flavonoid phenolic antioxidants such as carotenes, zeaxanthin, and lutein.

 

Medicinal uses

  • Its seeds are employed to prepare a decoction to treat flatulence and indigestion in traditional medicines.

  • The seeds are being used in traditional medicines to stave off the common cold symptoms.

 

Culinary uses

Cumin is generally toasted/roasted gently before adding in a recipe. In order to keep its fragrance and flavor intact, it is generally ground just before preparing dishes.
